AMBER TOWNSHIP — On April 26, Dr. Weston Squires and Dr. Dylan Hearns, along with several other local athletes, are going to participate in the St. Jude Rock ‘n” Roll Marathon in Nashville, Tenn., raising funds and awareness for an 8-year-old boy who has been diagnosed with Ewing sarcoma cancer.

The duo from Squires Chiropractic will run as part of Abram’s Army, helping to raise money to help Abram Buter, the son of Karl and Kellia Buter, who are originally from Scottville.

A few days before Christmas 2024, a lump was found on Abram’s left leg.

“His parents knew something wasn’t right and brought him to the pediatrician the next day,” Dr. Squires said. “They spent their holiday season going back and forth to the hospital for multiple tests. Abram was diagnosed with Ewing sarcoma of his femur on New Year’s Eve.”

Abram is currently undergoing Chemoherapy Treatment at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.

“The treatment is a two week cycle with two clinic visits for check ups and blood tests on the off weeks,” Squires said. “This leads to multiple trips every week.”

Abram is scheduled for surgery this month to remove the tumor and repair the damage to his femur and surrounding tissue.

“After the surgery he’ll have another 14 weeks of chemotherapy to destroy any cancer cells that were not removed with the tumor. We are so thankful that his testing has not shown any evidence of the cancer having metastasized.”

Squires said Abram is doing well so far without much in the way of side effects, except for the expected drops to his blood levels that happens with all chemotherapy.

“This is likely to change as he progresses through the Chemo and his body is beaten down,” Squires said.

“Abram loves all things young boys do: Hot Wheels, Legos, running, BMX/bicycle riding, fishing and anything to do with play. He also likes to play Super Mario Bro and Mario Kart on the SNES at home. Food-wise he currently loves tacos, Cheese Puffs, and mac and cheese. Vanilla and mint chocolate chip are the summer ice cream favorites. He really enjoys camping trips to new places, for exploration and new places to ride his bike.

Anyone wishing to donate to help with Abram’s Army, are asked to send checks to Squires Chiropractic Charity, 414 W. US 10, Scottville, MI 49454. Checks can also be hand delivered to the office, located at that address or to West Michigan Foot and Ankle, 333 N. Jebavy Dr. in Pere Marquette Township. Donations must be received by April 23.
