Friday, March 21 marks World Down Syndrome Day, a time dedicated to raising awareness, breaking stereotypes, and celebrating the lives and achievements of individuals with Down Syndrome. Chosen for the unique triplication of the 21st chromosome, the day is more than just a date on the calendar—it’s an opportunity to recognize the valuable contributions people with Down Syndrome make in our communities every day.
Cindy Boerema of Ludington, a member of the West Michigan Community Mental Health Consumer Advisory Panel, understands the significance of this day on a personal level. Her son, Erik Boerema, who lives in Ludington also, is a shining example of what it means to live life to the fullest. For the past 20 years, Erik has taken great pride in his work at Dimensions Unlimited, where he shreds papers as part of a dedicated team. His work brings him both joy and a sense of purpose, as he enjoys the camaraderie of his peers and staff.
Beyond the workplace, Erik is an accomplished athlete, having participated in Area 24 Special Olympics for 31 years. He has competed in a variety of sports, including bowling, basketball, aquatics, and track & field, demonstrating perseverance and passion with every event.
Yet Erik’s impact extends far beyond work and sports. He embraces life with enthusiasm, finding joy in art classes, community outings, and cherished moments with his family, including his dog, Jack, and two cats. A fan of 90s country music and video games, Erik stays connected with loved ones through FaceTime and has an undeniable gift for bringing smiles to those around him with his humor and warmth.
His story is a powerful reminder of why World Down Syndrome Day matters.
“It’s all about making a positive change—whether that’s by learning more, speaking up, or supporting the rights of people with Down Syndrome to live free from judgment,” Cindy said.
As we recognize World Down Syndrome Day, let’s take inspiration from Erik—embracing joy, celebrating abilities, and advocating for inclusion. Whether through education, kindness, or support, every action helps create a world where individuals with Down Syndrome are valued for exactly who they are.
