
Karl Schmiege
Karl William Schmiege, 79, went to heaven on Wednesday, February 19, 2025. He was born July 8, 1945, in Saginaw, to Lorenz and Ruth (Waidelich) Schmiege. He attended St. Paul’s Lutheran School and graduated from Michigan Lutheran Seminary in 1963. He went to Delta College and RETS Electrical School.
He went to work for Michigan Bell in Saginaw in 1973. Karl transferred to Sault Ste. Marie in 1990 and retired in 1999.
During the years in Saginaw, he belonged to a service organization called Pioneers where he volunteered to repair talking books for the blind. (record player for books on vinyl records.) He also narrated a circus for the blind in Flint.
In 1968 he married Judy Boyer from Scottville and were blessed with a daughter, Brenda, and a son, Kurt.
After retirement Karl and Judy moved to Ludington in 2000. In 2002 they joined Builders for Christ, a group of retired people that built churches, fellowship halls, and classrooms for their church, Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod. Projects were in Arizona, Nevada, Florida, Michigan, Minnesota, Texas and Wisconsin, and he took Kurt on one project in Grenada.
Karl is survived by his wife of 56 years, Judy; daughter, Brenda Boyle; son, Kurt (Danielle); grandchildren, Zaiden, and Amalia Boyle; step-grandchildren, Skylar, Ashton, and Elise Vining; brothers, Larry (Delores) of Texas, and Kevin (Penny) of Arizona; sisters, Karen (Pat) of New Mexico, and Kristie (Charles) Witbrodt of Royal Oak; and many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to express their thanks to the excellent staff at Oakview Medical Care Facility, the Alzheimer’s support group for Judy, and all of their friends and family that prayed.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 15, 2025 at Oak Grove Funeral Home of Ludington at 11 a.m., with a visitation beginning at 10am at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be directed to Redeemer Lutheran Church of Scottville, Alzheimer’s Association of Michigan, or Oakview Medical Care Facility.
