VICTORY TOWNSHIP — West Shore Community College’s Theater Department will present “Steel Magnolias,” a heartwarming and poignant Southern classic that masterfully blends humor, friendship, and resilience. Performances will be held at Center Stage Theater at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 27, Friday, Feb. 28 and Saturday, Mar. 1, as well as Friday, March 7 and Saturday, March 8. Matinee performances are scheduled for 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 2 and Sunday, March 9.

“Steel Magnolias” is a story that was popularized by the 1989 film of the same name. It was a play first, written by Robert Harling. Harling wrote the play as a tribute to his sister, who had type 1 diabetes, and to the women in his town who embraced his family. This story, told by six actresses, takes place entirely in Truvy’s Beauty Shop in a small town in northern Louisiana.

“These women (both the characters and the actors playing them) are funny, genuine, charming, and, above all else, supportive of each other,” said Michelle Kiessel, director of theatre. “Their conversations are lively and hysterically funny at times and other times are ladened with grief and heartache. This hopeful story about real, soul-deep connections feels hopeful and optimistic, even when its characters are struggling with the realities of life.”

“Steel Magnolias” showcases a colorful cast of characters, and a working salon at Center Stage! With its compelling dialogue and deeply resonant themes, the play remains a timeless tribute to the indomitable spirit of women.
