Boat sinks in Pere Marquette Lake

February 11, 2025

LUDINGTON — Ludington Police Department responded to a sunken vessel Tuesday afternoon, about 2 p.m., at Thompson Marina, according to a press release from LPD.

The initial complaint was for an upside down rowboat and debris in Pere Marquette Lake.

“Upon arrival, LPD officers located a rowboat, an emergency life raft, and other small items in the water,” the press release stated. “Additionally, the officers were able to see that the vessel Eagle, had completely sunk and was on it’s side, resting on the bottom of the lake.”

Personnel from U.S. Coast Guard Station Manistee were then called to assist.

“USCG personnel were able to utilize a drone and confirm no hazardous materials (fuel/oil) were leaking from the sunken vessel. LPD contacted the vessel owner and family who also advised there was no known fuel on board. At this time, it is unknown exactly why or when the vessel sank.”

LPD was additionally in contact with the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) and advised personnel there of the situation. As no hazardous materials were found to be leaking from the vessel, EGLE advised the vessel could remain in the water until the ice thaws and a barge can be brought in to recover the vessel, according to the press release. The vessel will continue to be monitored until recovered.

While on scene the USCG ice rescue personnel were able to retrieve the life raft and other debris from the water.
