LUDINGTON — A Mason County Jail inmate attacked a corrections deputy Monday morning, Jan. 27, requiring the deputy to be transported to the hospital for medical treatment, said Mason County Sheriff Kim Cole.
“On Monday, Jan. 27, 2025, at 11:15 a.m., a Mason County corrections deputy was injured after being attacked by an inmate in the Mason County Jail,” states Sheriff Cole in a press release. “The deputy, a nine-year member of the Mason County Sheriff’s Office, had went to a cell to speak with an inmate who was repeatedly hitting the intercom button. When the deputy entered the inmate’s cell, the inmate attempted to lock the deputy within the cell and began to assault him.
“As additional deputies arrived in the cell, the inmate gained control of the deputy’s taser and deployed it twice,” said the sheriff. “The first deployment struck the deputy in the back, but was ineffective as the deputy was wearing a ballistic vest. The second deployment grazed a second deputy’s head and face.
“Road patrol and MCSO detectives responded to the cell and assisted corrections deputies in gaining control of the suspect and situation,” he said. “At no time did the inmate exit the secured area nor did he ever run a risk of escape.
“The deputy that was attacked was transported to Corewell Health by law enforcement, where he was treated for cut to his face and an injury to his knee and elbow. Charges related to the attack will be sought through the Mason County Prosecutor’s Office.”
