LUDINGTON — Former Saint Joseph County Prosecuting Attorney David Marvin was hired recently as Mason County’s chief assistant prosecuting attorney.
A Three Rivers native, Marvin’s first day on the job was Jan. 2.
A 2001 Michigan State University Law School graduate, Marvin also studied at the University of Hong Kong Law School and in Beijing as an undergraduate. He graduated from Three Rivers High School in 1993 and then attended Principia College in Elsah, Illinois near Saint Louis, Missouri, graduating with a double major in political science philosophy.
He worked about 13 years as a corporate attorney — a job that required extensive travel. He then went into private practice.
“I went back to the place where I grew up — Saint Joseph County. I was there for about 10 years and did private practice.”
The Republican was elected prosecutor in 2020, serving a four-year term. He lost his bid for re-election in 2024. He served as chairman of the Republican Party in Saint Joseph County and has been involved in the Rotary organization. The new Ludington resident plans to get involved in the Rotary Club of Ludington once he gets acclimated to the new Mason County community.
A Harley Davidson owner, Marvin discovered the beauty of Mason County’s scenery on a motorcycle ride a few years ago. He has three children — Sophia, 18, Claudia, 16 and Alex, 12.
“I have a dog that went to court with me as the prosecutor every single day,” he said of his German Shepherd Greta von Marvin. “She’s a victim advocate. Eventually, I’d like to have her around,” he said of integrating the dog into providing victim advocate services at the Mason County Courthouse, focusing on calming child victims.
Marvin said he will be handling cases in both district and circuit court.
“I want to get to know the county and promote local government.
“My purpose — similar to an undersheriff — is to support the prosecutor,” he said of his new boss Mason County Prosecuting Attorney Beth Hand. “The CAPA (chief assistant prosecuting attorney) is appointed. Every prosecutor appoints a CAPA just like a sheriff appoints an undersheriff. I’m honored to be appointed as CAPA.”
“He brings to the office 20 years of experience as an attorney and the last four years as a prosecutor,” said Hand in her announcement of his hiring. “Mason County now has a combined 52 years of legal experience in this office to serve our community.”
