LUDINGTON — Howling winds combined with single digit temperatures outside did not put a damper on Ludington Area Schools ribbon cutting ceremony, celebrating the updates to the secondary complex on Monday.
Members of the LASD Board of Education, school administration, staff, construction, architecture and engineering teams along with community members gathered at the Ludington High School main entrance for the ceremony.
Superintendent Kyle Corlett said in his opening remarks he is truly proud of how the project has turned out, there are still little things that we have to finish.
“It is a beautiful building that will serve students for generations,” he said.
Thom Danckaert of GMB Architecture thanked the Ludington community for their support throughout the process.
“We hope that this facility will positively affect the students of this community for a long time,” he said. “This unique place housed new classrooms, collaborative learning centers, a new entrance and office space that makes the new entrance more secure, new cafeterias and new athletic facilities…”
Corlett said while not totally completed the project is about 99 percent complete — the community will see work going on through the end of the school year.
“Construction workers will likely be around the rest of the school year as they work on finishing little things.”
According to Corlett throughout the construction process LASD staff and students have been amazing.
“Last year was rough,” he said. “Especially at the middle school as we lived through construction, but the staff did their best to not let it distract from teaching.”
The staff and students were not the only ones who made the two year construction process bearable, he thanked the community for their unwavering support.
“Community support has been very much appreciated. We have gotten a lot of compliments and positive input,” he said. “We made sure the district followed through on everything that was promised and of course there are some things people wish we had added, but I think most understand how inflation has prohibited us from doing more.”
Following a short series of speeches and the ribbon cutting people were allowed to take a self-guided tour of the school.
