LUDINGTON — The Ludington Police Department announced that ice breaking operations for a barge are expected in Pere Marquette Lake beginning Tuesday Jan. 21 through Thursday Jan. 23. The barge is destined for the Oxy Chemical dock on the east side of the lake near Copeyon Park. It will be breaking ice, making the ice unsafe.

Ice anglers who have shanties in the path of the barge need to move their shanties prior to the barge’s arrival.

“Beginning on Tuesday Jan. 21 at daylight, through Thursday Jan. 23 mid-day, the tugboat Spartan will be conducting ice breaking operations, to allow for the safe movement of a barge to the Oxy dock,” states LPD in a press release.
“The ice-breaking operations by the Spartan will continue as needed, during this time, to ensure the safe movement of the barge. All ice breaking operations are scheduled to be completed by mid-morning Jan. 23. All those fishing on the lake need to be aware of the ice breaking operations and the impact that will have on your safety. There are currently several ice fishing shanties on the lake that will need to be moved before the ice breaking operations begin and the barge comes through.”
