LUDINGTON — Law enforcement personnel quickly apprehended an escaped inmate today who ran from a corrections deputy as the 26-year-old man was being escorted to the Mason County Courthouse from the Mason County Jail.

Mason County Sheriff Kim Cole said the inmate, who was wearing an orange jail outfit, handcuffed and “belly chained,” had been transported by van to the courthouse for a hearing. Upon arriving at the courthouse, at 2:22 p.m., and being let out of the van, the inmate fled heading east and south from the courthouse.

Sheriff Cole said the suspect was apprehended at 2:46 p.m. by Ludington Police Department officers shortly afterwards hiding behind a garage near the former Foster Elementary School about four blocks away. The sheriff’s office was also assisted by Michigan State police and Scottville Police Department. The sheriff’s office also utilized one of its drones and multiple K-9 units.

“We had a significant law enforcement response to assist within a very short period of time,” Cole said.

The inmate was scheduled to appear in 79th District Court for a hearing on charges he faces over a breaking and entering. The inmate also faces previous charges of possession of a controlled substance (methamphetamine/ecstasy), tampering with an electronic monitoring device, and retail fraud third degree.

Cole said he now face more charges related to escaping from custody. A Code Red alert warned people in the area of the escapee. Learn more about Code Red here.
