Editor’s Note: This is the beginning of a series of postings that will serve to ask the public for information about photographs from the Mason County Central School District historical archives. This is just a very small selection of the images with many more to come. Look for more images on the Mason County Historical Society’s Facebook page.
SCOTTVILLE — Last January, the Mason County Central Board of Education approved turning curation of its historical archives over to the Mason County Historical Society. Now comes the task of sorting and documenting photographs, papers, and artifacts as part of the MCC/Scottville Schools History Project.
MCC has an extensive collection of historical artifacts dating back to the 1870s, the beginning of one-room schools in the district. Among the collection are class photographs, old attendance books and many athletic trophies.
As we are working with a school district, it is the Historical Society’s goal to make this a learning experience for students. For this reason, I have been communicating with social studies/history teachers at the district in an effort to get students involved. Next month, seventh grade history students will take a tour of the Historical Society’s downtown Ludington center where they will see the extensive archives curated by the Society and learn more about the organization’s role in the community. We will also ask them to assist us in preserving MCC’s history.
Many of the photographs I have come across, and scanned, need identifying. These include identifying individuals in the photos and/or buildings. I am asking for the public’s help in doing so. These photos are being posted here on MCP and on our social media pages, along with the Historical Society’s social media pages and the Scottville History Page I administer on Facebook. Please do not guess. If you don’t know the answer, that is fine. We are looking for factual information. You may reply on a comment on social media, or send me an email at editor@mediagroup31.com.
Naturally, we are always looking for any items that are historically relevant to Mason County. If you have items from any of the county’s school districts, we would love to add them to the collection. Or, if you have other items that are Mason County-related, those items are certainly welcome as well. Contact Collections Manager Amber Valentine at (231) 843-4808 or amber@mchshistory.org.
The Mason County Historical Society is a non-profit charitable organization that owns and operates the downtown research center plus Historic White Pine Village and the Port of Ludington Maritime Museum. If you would like to become a member or to contribute to the Society, click here.
