Spore elected Scottville mayor

Dixie Spore

SCOTTVILLE — Dixie Spore was elected Scottville mayor Tuesday evening during the City Commission’s organizational meeting. Randy Wyman was elected mayor pro-tem. Scottville City Commission elects the mayor and mayor pro-tem as chair and co-chair from sitting commissioners. Both have voting privileges as they are also commissioners elected by their constituents. Scottville’s charter requires the commission to meet a week after the general election (in even years) and elect a mayor and mayor pro-tem. Newly elected commissioners are also sworn in and begin their terms. Most other elected positions in the county begin on Jan. 1.

Spore replaces Marcy Spencer who has served as mayor for the past four years. Spencer chose not to run for re-election when her term expired.

There are currently two open seats on the commission, left vacant by Spencer and Aaron Seiter, who also decided not to seek re-election. There had been a third vacant seat last month caused by the resignation of Commissioner Eric Thue. Thue had resigned prior to the election but his name was on the ballot. According to Wyman, Thue has chosen to accept to be sworn in again as a commissioner.

The commission faces some difficult choices as it must deal with a nearly $500,000  deficit. See related story here.
