FREE SOIL TOWNSHIP — The fifth season of Camp Sauble Cages of Carnage will begin Saturday, Oct. 12. As with past years, scare seekers will experience new thrills at this year’s event which promises to be the biggest and best yet.
The event is a fundraiser for Free Soil/Meade Fire Department, Grant Township Fire Department, and, Fountain Area Fire Department. To date, it has raised over $74,000, which has helped purchase life- and property-saving equipment above and beyond what is paid for through property taxes that fund the fire departments.
The haunted prison always offers new experiences, many of them subtle, as visitors take one of two routes. Most notable this year is the expansion of the haunted corn field. Volunteers have been working on the field since corn was planted in April. It’s not a maze — as volunteers don’t want people getting lost in the middle of the night — but it will offer lots of scares. The haunted field debuted last year but this year’s field is much larger and will offer many more scary moments.
Admission to the haunted prison is $15 per person, per route. Gates are open from 7:30 to 11:30 p.m. Dates are: Saturday, Oct. 12, Friday, Oct. 18, Saturday, Oct. 19, Friday, Oct. 25, and Saturday, Oct. 26.
One of the keys to the event’s success are its volunteers.
“We normally have 150 to 200 volunteers during the actual event,” said Heather Parrish-Cohoon of Free Soil/Meade Fire Department. “We are still in need for additional volunteers. These may be people helping behind the scenes or actors. We are always thankful for anyone who can do something to make this successful.
