LUDINGTON — The Book Mark, 201 S. Rath Ave., will again be offering its free On Track Reader Tutoring Program for children who are in kindergarten through third grade. Volunteer mentors are currently being sought.

A parent training is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 3 to discuss more information about the On Track Reader Tutoring Program and also to provide some hints to parents on how they can help their children improve their reading skills. The training will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Book Mark. Refreshments will be provided. Those interested in participating may register by emailing email info@ontrackreader.com. Include name, phone number and email address.

A volunteer tutot training will be held on Saturday, Oct. 5 from 9 a.m. to noon. The training will focus on educational materials and strategies used in the tutoring program. No experience is necessary. Those interested in participating may register by emailing email info@ontrackreader.com. Include name, phone number and email address.

The On Track Reader Volunteer Tutoring Program was designed by Dr. Marcia Kosanovich, daughter of Bob and Carole Kosanovich, owners of The Book Mark. Dr. Kosanovich will be conducting the trainings.

The inaugural tutoring program was launched last year with great success, Bob Kosanovich said. Bob and Carole are both retired college professors who  taught at Ferris State University. Marcia Kosanovich, is chief executive officer for MK Educational Research & Practice, LLC. She is a literacy educator and researcher with over 25 years of experience in teaching and creating professional development and curricula for preschool through 12th grade educators. She was the director of curriculum and instructional projects at the Florida Center for Reading Research and led the review of curricula and the development of the Student Center Activities. She is currently leading the development of the Toolkit for Differentiating Reading Instruction for Grades K-3 for the Regional Educational Laboratory Southeast at Florida State University.

The free program will include volunteer tutors who will meet with students after school and cover foundational reading skills. Quick assessments in foundational reading skills will be administered to each student and lessons will focus on students’ instructional needs. Students will be tutored in small groups. The 30-45 minute lessons will also include a snack!

Bob he has been working with officials from Ludington Area School District to launch the program. The district has agreed to provide transportation from school for participating students.

“We are launching the program with an emphasis on students from Ludington, but our goal is to expand this to any student in the area,” Bob said. “However, we will not turn anyone down.”

Those wishing to becoming a volunteer tutor are asked to take a three hour training session, with the choice of Friday, Sept. 29 or Saturday, Sept. 30, from 9 a.m. to noon. Coffee, pastries and lunch will be provided.

Those wishing to learn more about the program may email info@ontrackreader.com.
