WSCC News is a presentation of West Shore Community College in partnership with Mason County Press.
VICTORY TOWNSHIP — West Shore Community College will present the HumanKind event “Project UnLonely: Healing Our Crisis of Disconnection,” from Jennifer Martin, senior director of programs at the Foundation for Art and Healing, on Monday, Sept. 9, at 12:30 p.m. at the WSCC Center Stage Theater. The event is free and open to everyone.
The eighth annual HumanKind series theme is “Overcoming Loneliness: Togetherness, Connection, Community.” According to a press release from WSCC, loneliness is now considered a major public health issue.  The World Health Organization has convened a special committee on loneliness and the United States Surgeon General has diagnosed the U.S. as suffering from an epidemic of loneliness. Experts in higher education say that loneliness is a significant cause of increased rates of mental health issues in college students today. This year’s HumanKind series seeks to explore strategies for overcoming loneliness and fostering a greater sense of togetherness, connection, and community among West Shore students and in the college’s service district.
The Foundation for Art and Healing was created to address the growing problem of loneliness, by building connections through group art activities.
“We’re honored to have Jen Martin share her passion for building community through the work she has done with the Colors and Connection Program. Bringing people together through creative endeavors has fostered connection and we are excited to share that with our community,” said, Darby Johnsen, WSCC dean of arts and sciences.
HumanKind is West Shore Community College’s arts, culture, and lecture series that includes presentations, workshops, films, performing arts events and more. To learn more about the HumanKind series, visit https://www.westshore.edu/humankind or email humankind@westshore.edu.
