Three others charged with violating ‘no wake zone.’
LUDINGTON — A 45-year-old Howell man was charged by Mason County Sheriff’s Office marine deputies in the Ludington harbor Saturday morning, Aug. 31, for reckless operation, a misdemeanor, after the boat passed in front of the S.S. Badger carferry and did not move “despite numerous horn blows from the car ferry and warning from marine patrol,” said Mason County Sheriff Kim Cole.
Three other boaters were charged for not slowing down in the “no wake zone” between 5:30 and 7:30 a.m., which was the S.S. Badger’s arrival time frame into Ludington harbor. The three included a 26-year-old Kenochkee, Mich. man, a 58-year-old Clinton Township man, and a 41-year-old Wyandotte man. No-wake violations in the harbor are misdemeanors.
The Ludington Police Department issued a harbormaster order, Aug. 22, that limited the hours that people can fish in the Ludington Harbor due to dangerous conditions caused by boats not yielding to the S.S. Badger car ferry, which ports there. The order was rescinded the next day due. Ludington Police Chief Chris Jones said the Michigan Department of Natural Resources challenged the order.
