LUDINGTON — Local author and historian Dr. Bill Anderson will speak about the history of Major League ballparks as part of the Mason County Historical Society’s ongoing Speakers Series on Wednesday, July 24, 7 p.m. at the Mason County Research Center, 130 E. Ludington Ave.
Anderson’s career as a sports historian is marked by his authoritative works on the Detroit Tigers. His first book, “The Detroit Tigers: The Greatest Players and Moments in Tigers’ History”, has been in print for 32 years and is now in its fifth edition. Anderson’s work has not only been endorsed by notable figures such as Hall of Fame broadcaster Ernie Harwell, Tigers presidents John McHale Jr. and Dave Dombrowski, Hall of Fame shortstop Alan Trammell, and the current voice of the team, Dan Dickerson, but has also inspired a generation of sports enthusiasts.

His acclaimed book, “The View From the Dugout: The Journals of Red Rolfe,” brought him national recognition and an opportunity to speak at the national conference of The Society for American Baseball Research in Seattle. In 2012, Wayne State University Press published his book “The Glory Years of the Detroit Tigers 1920-1950,” which won a national award as the best sports book of the year.
During his presentation, Anderson will take the audience on a nostalgic and engaging journey through the evolution of major league ballparks. From the days of wooden structures to modern concrete and steel designs, he will highlight the significant architectural and functional changes in ballpark design. Dr. Anderson will also discuss the impact of Astroturf, retractable roofs, and the shift towards smaller, more intimate stadiums with hallmark architecture. Throughout the presentation, he will recount exciting moments that have become cherished memories for baseball fans, whether experienced live, on the radio, TV, or through reading, keeping the audience entertained and captivated.

Anderson is former president of West Shore Community College and served as director of the Michigan Department of History, Arts and Libraries, serving both Gov. John Engler and Gov. Jennifer Granholm.
This event is part of the Mason County Historical Society’s ongoing efforts to provide enriching and educational programming for the community. Admission is free, and all are welcome to attend.
