LUDINGTON — The Ludington Offshore Classic began Tuesday and will continue through Sunday, July 21. New this year, some of the fish collected during the tournament, hosted by the Chamber Alliance of Mason County, will be donated to the Lakeshore Food Club.

“The daily contests are anticipated to bring thousands of pounds of fish ashore, and participants in the tournament will have the opportunity to donate their catches to the Lakeshore Food Club,” said Brandy Miller, president/CEO of the Chamber Alliance. “This is a proud milestone for our tournament, extending its impact beyond economic benefits to addressing one of our community’s greatest needs.”

“We are so thankful to be able to turn a week of fishing tournaments into months of food access for our members,” said O’Nealya Gronstal, executive director of Lakeshore Food Club. “We will be able to provide our community with fresh fish that week and, depending on fish donation levels, potentially frozen fish throughout the year.

“With a membership of over 2,900 local households, and new statistics telling us that 41 percent of all Michiganders cannot afford the very basic necessities, we know our work is more vital than ever. We are so thankful we don’t work alone.”

Donated fish will be available to Lakeshore Food Club members beginning Thursday, July 18 at 920 E. Tinkham Ave., Ludington.

The Big Boys’ tournament portion of the event started Tuesday and continues today, Wednesday, July 17. Boats must return by 2 p.m. with weigh-in taking place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Waterfront Park. Awards will immediately follow the final weigh-in.

The Ludington Legends Memorial Tournament takes place Thursday morning with a 6 a.m. shotgun start at the Ludington pier heads. Boat return and weigh-in will be the same as today.

The Ladies Pro/Am and Big Fish Tournament and the Youth Tournament take place Friday, July 19 with a 6 a.m. shotgun start. Youth boats must return to harbor by 1 p.m. with weigh-in taking place between 1 to 2 p.m. at Waterfront Park. Ladies’ boats must return by 2 p.m. with weigh-in between 2 to 3 p.m. at Waterfront Park. Awards will follow the final Ladies’ weigh-in.
