MEADE TOWNSHIP — Fire destroyed a house at 5261 E. Hasenbank Rd. late Sunday evening. Firefighters were dispatched to the residence at 11:28 p.m. Free Soil/Meade Fire Department Chief Vince Williams said the homeowner, Michael Pickard, was not home when the fire began. He said Pickard came home to discover the house engulfed in flames.
“Because there isn’t good cell phone service in that area, he had to drive a distance to call 911,” Williams said. “When the first fire department unit arrived most of the house was already on the ground. We were able to save the garage.”
Fire departments responding included Free Soil/Meade Fire Department, Fountain Area Fire Department and Grant Fire Department. The Fountain Area Fire Department Auxiliary also assisted.
Firefighters were on scene for about four hours.
