LUDINGTON – The Mason County Historical Society will hold a special event, Wednesday, July 3, honoring the Neal family and House of Flavors. The event will include a ceremony, presentation on the history of House of Flavors, an unveiling of the Neal Legacy display, and, of course, ice cream. It will be held at the Mason County Research Center, 130 E. Ludington Ave., from 10: 30 a.m. to noon.
James Jensen, Mason County Historical Society board president, will kick off the event with a presentation on the profound impact of the Neal family on Ludington’s local history and economy. This will be followed by unveiling the Neal Legacy, a showcase of the family’s journey from 1948 to the present day. Attendees will gain insights into how Robert Blackburn Neal, Sr. transformed Miller Dairy into the renowned House of Flavors and how his son, Robert “Scoops” Neal Jr., expanded the business into Michigan’s largest ice cream manufacturer.
Family members will share their personal stories and reflections, providing a unique perspective on the family’s commitment to quality and community. The Neal family’s legacy is not only one of business success but also of significant contributions to Ludington’s cultural and economic development.
The event will conclude with an ice cream social featuring coffee and House of Flavors’ ice cream, celebrating the innovative spirit of the Neal family and their dedication to bringing joy to the community.

The Mason County Historical Society operates Historic White Pine Village, the Port of Ludington Maritime Museum, and the Mason County Research Center. Its mission is to preserve and present Mason County’s rich history, inspiring visitors to appreciate and engage with their heritage.
