Dakota Young, 32, the beloved child of Robert and Sherry Talsma of Scottville, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, June 26, 2024.
Dakota is survived by children Wyatt and Aurora; brother Nicholas (Priscilla); nieces Leticia and Natalia; nephews Sebastian, Caspian, and Christopher (Izabella); nephew Liam; and niece Lily; and several cousins and beloved family. Dakota’s memory lives on through cherished connections with family and friends.
A 2010 graduate of Mason County Central High School, Dakota served in the US Army, demonstrating unparalleled bravery and dedication during a tour in Afghanistan. Dakota’s exceptional service was recognized with several medals, including the prestigious Afghanistan Campaign Medal with a campaign star, the Army Commendation Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, and the NATO Medal.
After leaving the military, Dakota pursued a career as an IT technician with Trinity Health System. Beyond work, Dakota, Wyatt, and Aurora reveled in outdoor adventures, everything from camping to zoo visits and biking escapades, always seeking the next thrilling experience. Dakota’s zest for life was contagious, leaving an indelible mark on those fortunate enough to share in the adventures.
Dakota became a pen pal with many individuals from around the globe, sharing cultural insights, social experiences, and fun facts. One of Dakota’s most cherished friendships was with Emil Kerr, Dakota’s best friend. Emil stood by Dakota during joyous and challenging times, their bond unbreakable. Whether it was epic Dungeons & Dragons quests or late-night conversations, Emil’s presence brought comfort and an inspired friendship. Emil’s unwavering friendship is a testament to Dakota’s significant impact on so many friends near and far.
May we all remember Dakota’s courage, kindness, and zest for life. During this challenging time, our hearts go out to Wyatt, Aurora, Nicholas, parents, and the extended family. Dakota’s light will continue to shine brightly in our hearts and memories.
