SCOTTVILLE — The boil water order for the City of Scottville and Amber Township water customers has been lifted. Water users are being advised to run their faucets for a couple minutes to bleed any air or cloudy water that may still be in the system. Those with an aerator on their faucet should consider cleaning it out.
Water service was interrupted Friday morning when a contractor was boring along US 10-31 west of Stiles Road. The contractor’s work had no relation to the water service. Upon noticing a reduction in water pressure, personnel from the City of Ludington Department of Public Works and the City of Scottville Department of Public Works began investigating the cause. Within a short time, water towers in Ludington and Scottville had completely drained. The area where the breakage occurred was within the service area maintained by the City of Ludington.
Water customers in the impacted area, which included Amber Township along US 10-31 east of Stiles Road and the entire City of Scottville, did not have water until late Friday evening. A boil water order was in place from that time until 2 a.m. Monday. During that time consumable water needed to be boiled.
The City of Scottville provided bottled water to residents throughout the day on Saturday and Sunday morning. Mason County Central had to rent several porta-johns for those attending its high school commencement ceremony Friday evening.
“Many people came out to help make sure our residents were provided with safe drinking water,” said Scottville Mayor Marcy Spencer. “We are very grateful for those volunteers who helped.”
Spencer, who is currently acting city manager, said she and Scottville DPW employees will be meeting with representatives from City of Ludington and Amber Township this week to investigate the incident.
“This was an incident that was not caused by a contractor who was not affiliated with either the city of Scottville or Ludington,” Spencer said. “We plan on seeking compensation for all the expenses both cities have incurred. It isn’t right that this falls on the taxpayers.”
