Community Foundation asks for public to take community center survey

LUDINGTON — The Community Foundation for Mason County, along with key community stakeholders, announces the launch of a county-wide survey to gather input for the potential development of a multigenerational community center. The survey is aimed to measure community interest in this type of center and gather insights on the types of social, cultural, recreational, fitness, and educational activities that residents would engage in should a center of this sort become a possibility for Mason County.

The survey is a critical component of the feasibility study, which will assess the community’s desire to have such a facility in Mason County, gather opinions regarding potential location, and identify the types of amenities and services that should be considered if the project were to proceed.

Multigenerational community centers are designed to be quality-of-life facilities where individuals from different age groups can come together to engage in various activities. These centers aim to foster social connections, provide educational opportunities, and offer recreational and fitness programs tailored to the unique needs of the local community. The community-wide survey will help shape what types of activities and services would be desired, should a center become feasible in Mason County.

“We do not have a proposal for a community center in place at this time,” said Andrea Large, executive director of the Foundation. “Before that would be possible, we need to hear from our community. This survey is a vital element of the feasibility study being conducted. The community’s input is critical to our process as we explore the possibility of creating a new multigenerational community center that would serve as a hub for people of all ages, providing a space for a range of activities, social support, learning, wellness, and other valuable services. By participating in the survey, residents will help shape the future of this potential development and contribute to creating a vibrant and inclusive space for all.

The idea of a new multigenerational community center in Mason County began in September of 2022, when individuals representing various community organizations and agencies met in response to sentiments expressed regarding the need for expanded recreational space, amenities, and activities in the community. This convening of partners led to the formation of a smaller committee, tasked with determining the feasibility and level of interest to support a new multi-generational community center within Mason County.

This public survey and feasibility initiative is a collaborative effort involving primary stakeholders, including the Community Foundation for Mason County, the County of Mason, the Chamber Alliance of Mason County, Corewell Health Ludington Hospital, Ludington Area Schools, Hamlin Township, Mason County Central Schools, Mason County Eastern Schools, the City of Ludington, Pere Marquette Charter Township, the City of Scottville, Lakeshore Food Club, the District 10 Health Department, and West Shore Community College.
