SCOTTVILLE — Mason County Grandparents Raising Grandchildren (GRG), and family members ages 10 years and up, can learn basic CPR at the monthly GRG meeting Wednesday, May 15, beginning at 5:30 p.m., at the Scottville Area Senior Center, 140 S. Main St.
Any “kinship caregiver” raising a young relative is eligible to join the GRG program. Those interested are asked to call the senior center at 231-757-4705.
The Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) training will be provided by Corewell Health experts Kelly Barnhardt, RN, and Leona Ashley. Using specially-equipped mannequins, they will provide hands-on instruction in emergency chest compressions, as well as step-by-step emergency response to cardiac arrest.
“We encourage anyone in Mason County who is raising a young relative to contact us for this opportunity, whether or not they have participated in our program before,” said GRG coordinator Ellen Kerans. “It’s a great opportunity for both adults and young people to learn life-saving skills.
“As we provide a meal for all attending, it’s doubly important for us to know you plan to attend so we have enough food and the instructors bring enough materials for everyone. We are actively seeking for more people to benefit from our program.”
There will also be supervised, separate activities during the Wednesday evening meeting for young people less than 10 years of age (the minimum age for CPR training).
The Grandparents Raising Grandchildren program provides adult caregivers with expert advice for their vital (and often unexpected) role, supervised activities for their “grandfamily” members, as well as intergenerational activities such as the CPR training or fun family excursions.
The GRG group meets on the third Wednesday of the month at the senior center, located at 140 S. Main St. in Scottville. Funding is provided by the Area Agency on Aging of Western Michigan, the Mason County senior millage, and donations.
