LUDINGTON — A Michigan State Police trooper is facing charges for domestic violence, a misdemeanor, following an April 14, 2024 arrest by Ludington Police Department. Sammy Sidney Seymour, Jr., 50, is assigned to the Cadillac MSP post. According to arraignment information from the 79th District Court, he was arraigned on April 14. A pre-trial conference between the prosecutor’s office and the defense attorney took place today and another pre-trial conference has been scheduled for June 3 at 1 p.m. Pre-trial conferences do not take place in open court.
UPDATED information: Under the Michigan Freedom of Information Act, Mason County Press has requested a copy of the police report. That request was initially denied by the city’s attorney, at the request of the Mason County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office. However, since posting this story, that denial has been repealed. More details will be released when they become available.
According to Beth Hand, Mason County chief assistant prosecutor, Seymour was arrested in the evening of April 14 following an alleged incident in the 700 block of North Gaylord Avenue. Hand said Seymour was in a relationship with the female victim.
According to MSP Lt. Derrick Carroll, information officer for MSP Cadillac Post, Seymour was placed on suspension effective April 14, “pending adjudication of his criminal case and any resulting internal investigation.”
This was not Seymour’s first arrest.
In January 2015, Seymour was arrested by LPD and charged with operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated and having an open intoxicant in the vehicle. As with this most recent case, he had also been placed on administrative leave. In March 11, the case against Seymour went to trial in Mason County’s 79th District Court. The two day trial ended in a mistrial due to a hung jury.
In February 2010, a plea agreement was reached sentencing Seymour to operating an off road vehicle was impaired, even though he had been arrested driving an automobile. He was sentenced to serve one day in jail with credit for one day served; outpatient treatment, which his court file indicates he has completed; $870 in fines and costs; 93 days discretionary jail for one year; and his ORV privileges are suspended for 90 days.
Court records from the previous case are no longer accessible in the micourt.com system.
Seymour has been a trooper for 24 years.
According to court documents, Seymour was released on a $500 cash bond.
