Human trafficking topic of presentation

August 1, 2013

PERE MARQUETTE TWP. — An FBI specialist will present Human Trafficking: Modern Day Slavery and Victim Assistance on Tuesday, Aug. 6 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The program, held at United Methodist Church of Ludington, is being presented by Philanthropic Educational Organization (P.E.O.) Chapter FG and will focus on domestic minor sex trafficking.

Carmen Kucinich is a victims advocate assigned to the FBI in Grand Rapids and Lansing.

In a 2009 interview with WOOD TV 8, Kucinich called sex trafficking a constant — but often hidden — threat.

“It’s not something where you’re going to see juveniles being prostituted,” she said. “You’re not going to see them walking the streets so the concern is, people don’t think it’s a problem in southwest Michigan, they don’t realize it because they’re not seeing it. But all of this is behind closed doors. These girls are being moved around and it’s happening all the time.”

P.E.O. is a philanthropic organization founded in 1869 that now has a membership of a quarter of a million in chapters in the U.S. and Canada. Its mission is to promote educational opportunities for women.

The Methodist church is located at 5810 Bryant Road, Ludington, Michigan.
