WSCC News is a presentation of West Shore Community College in partnership with Mason County Press.
SCOTTVILLE – West Shore Community College’s Humankind will hold its closing piece on Saturday, April 20 beginning at 2 p.m. at 127 S. Main St. with the performance “Winterage: Sweetland,” an exhibition by artists Lucy Cash, Mark Jeffery and a list of other collaborating and contributing artists.
At 2:30 the event will move to the Scottville branch of the Mason County District Library, 204 E State Street.
The performance, titled “Winterage Sweetland: A Gathering | A Dulcimer | A Song”, is a celebratory community event specially created for the former settlement of Sweetland, now Scottville. Sweetland was the name of the town from in the early 1880s, named after James Sweetland, who owned a lumber mill. The name was changed to Scottville later that decade after Hiram Scott. The event is free and open to the public.
Through the exhibition, the leading artists and their collaborators explore topics such as labor and rural life through a strange lens. By presenting this work in rural Michigan, the artists draw parallel between rural communities in the United States and United Kingdom, and their unique and authentic perspectives offer us different ways to view joys and struggles of rural living.
The exhibition is at four different locations: WSCC’s Manierre Dawson Gallery, two billboards on Highway 10-31 between Scottville and Ludington, the Ludington Area Center for the Arts (LACA), 107 S. Harrison St., Ludington, and downtown Scottville.
The performance coincides with the first showing of the short film titled “2 Holtwood Cottages: a Winterage”, presented as a part of WSCC’s Humankind series three years ago. The film, which is the central element of the current exhibition (and can be seen at the Manierre Dawson Gallery), is set on the farm where Mark Jeffery grew up and where his dad, Joe Jeffery, died tragically of a fall from the roof of the milking parlor. This week would have marked Joe’s 82nd birthday.
The exhibition is presented as a part of the college’s Humankind series. This year’s theme of the series is Inclusion: Conversations Around A Crowded Table. More information on the series can be found at westshore.edu.
