SCOTTVILLE — City Commission was expected to pass a resolution tonight, during its regular meeting, to seek bidders to demolish the old McPhail Field press boxes.
The press boxes haven’t been used in 26 years. For about seven decades, McPhail Field was the home of Scottville High School football and, later, Mason County Central High School football (MCC was formed through consolidation in 1955).
The 19-acre field was a gift from Curtis W. McPhail, founder of State Savings Bank of Scottville (now West Shore Bank), and his wife, Catherine McPhail in 1925. The field was home to Spartan sports until 1998 when Spartan Community Field was opened on the MCC campus north of McPhail Field. For 26 years the old football field has been utilized for various youth recreation sports, mostly football and soccer, making it the oldest multi-sport athletic field in Mason County (Oriole Field is likely the second oldest, it opened in 1935). Much of the rest of McPhail Field is still utilized for little league t-ball, baseball and softball and adult softball.
The press boxes have been in poor condition for several years.
