VICTORY TWP. — Steven Deller, Professor of Nursing at West Shore Community College, has achieved credentialing as a Certified Nurse Educator (CNE) by the National League for Nursing (NLN).
For academic nurse educators, national certification establishes nursing education as a specialty area of practice and creates a means for faculty to demonstrate their expertise in this role. It also communicates to students, peers and the academic and health care communities that the highest standards of teaching excellence are being met by the college. Obtaining CNE certification is the highest mark of distinction for nursing faculty.
Deller began his nursing career by completing an Associate of Science degree in Nursing from Highland Park Community College. He then completed the bridge RN-MSN program through the University of Phoenix.
Prior to teaching, Deller worked in the Henry Ford Health System in the Detroit area, for 15 years, in the nursing specialties of Medical-Surgical, Mental Health, and out-patient Internal Medicine.
In 2001, Deller moved to Scottville with his wife and four children to begin his nursing teaching career at WSCC. In 2011, he was the first nursing instructor to receive the WSCC Faculty Excellence Award and he is also the first nursing instructor to earn the CNE credential.
“Steve’s passion in his teaching is motivated by his goal to help mentor and facilitate the learning of his nursing students to be the most competent, caring, and critical-thinking nurses that they can become and we congratulate Professor Deller on this excellent professional achievement,” said Susan North, WSCC’s Director of Nursing.
Dedicated to excellence in nursing education, NLN members include nurse educators, education agencies, health care agencies, and interested members of the public. The NLN offers faculty development programs, networking opportunities, testing and assessment, nursing research grants, and public policy initiatives to its 33,000 individual and 1,200 institutional members.
