Conservation District to host tree and shrub selection workshop
WEBBER TOWNSHIP (Lake County) — The Mason-Lake Conservation District, in collaboration with the Manistee Conservation District and Michigan State University Extension, will host a presentation on tree and shrub selection on Wednesday, Feb. 7 from 10 a.m. to noon at Webber Township Hall, 2011 W Springtime St.
Presentations will be provided by Josh Shields, Forestry Assistance Program forester and wildlife biologist with the Manistee and Mason-Lake conservation districts, and Emily Lavely, tree fruit educator with MSU Extension.
Topics include:
- Matching tree and shrub species to the proper conditions
- Selecting fruit trees based on the desired use of fruit, susceptibility to disease and care
- Site preparation and planting techniques
- Pruning methods for fruit trees
- Proper handling and care of seedlings and fruit trees
- Spring versus autumn planting
- Containerized versus bare root stock
- Protecting trees and shrubs from white-tailed deer and other animals
- The use of tree and shrub planting for timber production, wildlife habitat conversion, planting of under-represented species, erosion control, and other conservation purposes
The presentation can help landowners choose the correct trees and shrubs to buy from the Conservation District’s annual Tree Seedling Sale. Professionals such as foresters,
ecologists, and loggers, interested in planting trees and shrubs are welcome as well.
Continuing education credits from the Society of American Foresters for the event will be available.
