County board to consider additional courtroom, renovations

PERE MARQUETTE TOWNSHIP — When it meets Tuesday, Oct. 10, the Mason County Board of Commissioners is expected to approve an estimated $80,000 to $110,000 construction project at the Mason County Courthouse which will result in a new courtroom and improvements to an existing courtroom.

Charlie Gunsell of Mason County Probation Office and Probate/Chief Judge Jeffrey Nellis have met with contractors and an architect to discuss the project. The proposed project would include construction of a new courtroom in the existing probate offices on the main floor of the 129-year-old building along with adapting the Commissioners’ Chambers, on the second floor, to allow for jury trials. Though the room is still called the Commissioners’ Chambers, the commission no longer meets there and the room is often used for court hearings when then main courtroom is in use.

The board of commissioners meeting will begin at 7 p.m. at the Mason County Airport Terminal conference room, 5300 W. US 10.
