Road Commission warns about signs in right-of-way

Over the past several weeks, multiple signs have appeared in the right-of-way along roads and streets in Mason County. Many of them are promoting private businesses. The Mason County Road Commission has sent out a notice that installation of signs within the right-of-way on roadways which are under the jurisdiction and authority of the Mason County Road Commission are not allowed.

A press release from the road commission states: Signs that are placed within the right of ways of County primary and local roads may be removed and disposed of by the Mason County Road Commission, without notice. This includes decorative signs, advertising signs, political signs and all signs installed without the approval of the Mason County Road Commission.

The removed signs shall be retained by the Mason County Road Commission for a period of seven days.  If said signs are not called for or picked up by the sign owner or his/her designee, they shall be disposed of by the Mason County Road Commission.

The Michigan Department of Transportation also has regulations against signs on a state highway right-of-way and both the cities of Ludington and Scottville also have ordinances regarding sign placement.
