VICTORY TOWNSHIP — On Tuesday, which happened to be “Pi Day”, 179 area middle school students gathered at the West Shore Community College arena to test their math skills. The event, coordinated by MiSTEM Region 9 and West Shore Educational Service District, included students from 10 schools including Hart, Ludington Area School District, Ludington Area Catholic, Mason County Central, Mason County Eastern, Pentwater, Shelby, Walkerville, Kaleva-Norman-Dickson, and Manistee Area Public Schools.
Business partners of the event included Nordlund & Associates, Harsco Rail, PCA, West Shore Educational Service District and WSCC. The event included a sprint round, target round and team round. Then, the top 10 individual scorers competed in a countdown round. The finalist was Peter Tuinstra of Hart Middle School.
The event began locally in 1984 by Nordlund & Associates.
March 14 is often referred to as “Pi Day” because of the mathematical equation known as pi (Greek) which is the ratio of the circumference of any circle to the diameter of that circle. In decimal form, the value of pi is approximately 3.14.
