House fire in Ludington

LUDINGTON — Three fire departments were on scene of a house fire at 209 E. Melendy St. early Friday morning. The fire was reported about midnight.

Police on scene said the home’s single occupant was able to get out safely with her dog. She apparently heard a popping noise and the lights went out. Within moments the house had filled up with smoke.

Ludington Fire Department was first called to the scene. Chief Jerry Funk, upon arriving, said flames were showing from the roof with heavy smoke. About 15 minutes later he requested assistance from Pere Marquette Township and Hamlin Township fire departments.

Firefighters used Ludington’s ladder truck to cut into the tin roof, which appeared to be causing much of the fire to build up inside the house. Stacks of cardboard boxes could be seen against the rear upper level windows, which possibly hindered controlling the fire.

Ludington Police Department, Mason County Sheriff’s Office and Life EMS were also on scene.
