SHERIDAN TOWNSHIP — Just a few minutes before more snow came down, I was able to get some footage of Round Lake. I spent a lot of time here when I was a kid. Sheridan Township Park was the summer gathering spot for the VanderHaag family (my maternal grandparents), who lived just a few miles north at the end of Campbell Road near Bear Swamp. My Uncle Fred VanderHaag and my dad, Dick Alway, would bring their ski boats and we would spend several weekends a summer on Round Lake. My cousins, Chris and Kyle, would celebrate their August birthdays there.
Round Lake is 571 acres. Its only public access to the lake is located at Sheridan Township Park, on Dewey Road. This little park is a hidden gem that has seen a decline in usage over the years. It offers a great picnic shelter and rustic camping.
Round Lake is full of local lore, with stories of Chicago gangsters staying in the area in the 1920s and 1930s.
Today, the lake is a mix of year-round and seasonal residents. Timber Surf Camping Resort is located on the north side of the lake on Dewey Road while cabin rentals are available at Cabin Fever Resort located on the south side of the lake on Sugar Grove Road. Both are locally owned.
