LUDINGTON — Fire and smoke damaged FloraCraft’s extrusion building Wednesday morning. Ludington Fire Department was dispatched to the building, on the northwest corner of Lavinia Street and Bryant Road at 11:34 a.m. Upon arrival, they discovered an active, but contained, fire in the building. Heavy black smoke had filled the building.

CEO and President Eric Erwin, on the scene, said company protocols call for the immediate evacuation of all company buildings during a fire alarm. He said the fire suppression system went off and employees attempted to use extinguishers to stop the fire.

“When they were unable to stop the fire, the employees evacuated and waited for the fire department, which arrived within eight minutes,” Erwin said. Five people were working in the 40,000 square feet building. Erwin said nobody was hurt.

“We are very thankful for the quick response of the Ludington Fire Department and Ludington Police Department,” Erwin said.

Erwin said the cause of the fire was unknown at the time. The initial foam product is produced in the building.

Pere Marquette Township Fire Department was called to assist but disregarded prior to its arrival.
