WSCC News is a presentation of West Shore Community College in partnership with Mason County Press.

West Shore Community College Professor of Music Studies and Director of Performing Arts Ted Malt was recognized by the Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association (MSBOA) this past week.

Malt was awarded an honorary lifetime membership in the MSBOA.  Honorary appointments are given through a nomination and committee approval process, recognizing significant contributions to the field of instrumental music.  Andrea Mack, Manistee High School band director, nominated Malt. “Ted helps me every time I request anything and I know he would do the same for anyone who asks,” Mack said.  “He is giving of his time, resources, and always encouraging of students.”

The MSBOA is organized in regional-district associations in both the upper and lower peninsulas of Michigan, serving over 1,500 public, parochial and private schools. The MSBOA consists of more than 1,600 instrumental music teachers certified by the State of Michigan to teach music education in schools.

Malt began his musical education at 9-years-old studying classical piano and saxophone.  He has spent the past 22 years teaching and performing.  Locally he has served as band director at Mason County Central School and Ludington Area School District before coming to WSCC.

“Ted exemplifies what it means for the college to be a part of a community,” stated WSCC President, Scott Ward.  “We are proud of his accomplishments and thankful he is a part of our team.”
