Education Spotlight: Ron Tyndall, helping 6th graders figure out who they want to be.

SCOTTVILLE — Many teachers are inspired by a mentor. For Mason County Central Middle School teacher Ron Tyndall, that mentor was his MCC High School social studies and history teacher Gerry Genter. Tyndall is in his 27th year as a sixth grade science teacher. Prior to that, he spent one year teaching fourth grade and just over a year as a substitute teacher in Mason and Lake counties. Tyndall has spent many years as a track and basketball coach at MCC as well.

“My goal every year is to create a classroom atmosphere where kids feel important and have fun learning. Laughter is mandatory,” Tyndall said.

“There are so many kids who come from situations that don’t value the importance of having a good education and trying to get a sixth grader to believe that it is their education that will allow them so many opportunities to make a life that is better than the one they have is my biggest challenge as an educator.”

Tyndall is a 1985 graduate of MCC and earned a bachelor’s degree from Grand Valley State University. He attended Aquinas College for graduate studies.

Tyndall shares a saying with his students: “Sixth grade may not be the time to figure out what you want to be, but it is a perfect time to figure out who you want to be.”
