LUDINGTON — Jeffery Allen Kaiser, 58, of 209 S. Rowe St., has been arraigned in 79th District Court on multiple charges in connection to an incident that allegedly took place Thursday night in the 500 block of East Danaher Street.
According to court documents, Kaiser is accused of assaulting a man with a pistol while trying to rob and steal from that man. He is also accused of assault with a dangerous weapon against a woman and another man with intent to commit murder or to inflect great bodily harm less than murder.
According to Chief Timothy Kozal, LPD responded to the 500 block of East Danaher Street at 6:17 p.m. for a report of an assault with a gun. Officers later received a call of a man with a gun walking in the 200 block of South Rowe Street.
“Pursuant to the investigation, probable cause was developed to arrest a 58-year-old male resident of Ludington,” Kozal said.
Kaiser faces eight nine felony charges plus a habitual offender charge. Those charges include:
Assault with intent to rob while armed, punishable by up to life imprisonment.
Felony firearm (four counts), punishable by up to two years imprisonment.
Assault with a dangerous weapon/felonious assault (two counts), punishable by up to four years and/or a $2,000 fine.
Carrying a concealed weapon, punishable by up to five years imprisonment and/or a $2,000 fine.
Habitual offender, second offense, punishable by up to 1 1/2 times the maximum sentence on the primary offense or a lesser term.
Bail was set at $25,000, cash surety. A probable cause hearing has been scheduled for Aug. 26 at 1:30 p.m. in 79th District Court.
Kaiser is currently on probation, according to the Michigan Offender Tracking Information System (OTIS), stemming from a Nov. 11, 2019 sentencing of assaulting/resisting/obstructing a police officer. He had been arrested on the charges by Ludington Police Department on June 10, 2019.
In May of this year, Kaiser, along with his son, Kevin James Kaiser, 26, was arrested for a reported breaking and entering in progress on Taylors Court in the City of Scottville. That case is still pending in court. See story here.
LPD was assisted by Mason County Sheriff’s Office deputies and Michigan State Police troopers in an attempt to locate the suspect in the area of the 200 block of South Rowe. The Mason-Oceana Emergency Response team also responded to assist. Officers secured a residence in the 200 block of South Rowe Street in an attempt to arrest the suspect, Kozal said. At approximately 10 p.m. the suspect voluntarily exited the house.
Kozal said a handgun was recovered during a search of the residence along with ammunition.
Anyone with further information about the case are asked to call the Ludington Police Department at (231) 843-3425.
