Man who left bloody mess at hotel arraigned for resisting arrest, disorderly.

LUDINGTON — Zachariah Paul Gerovac, 22, of 7807 E. US 10, Branch, was arraigned Saturday, March 28, in 79th District Court on two charges of assaulting/resisting/obstructing a police officer and a charge of disorderly person, drunk. The assault charges carry a maximum penalty of two years imprisonment.

Gerovac was arrested early Friday morning, March 27, by Michigan State Police after he allegedly pulled the fire alarm at the Holiday Inn Express, 4079 W. US 10, leaving a blood on the alarm handle and on the walls of the hotel. Troopers and Mason County Sheriff’s Office deputies apprehended him behind the hotel in a swampy area. Gerovac was naked and bloody, sitting on the ground, talking to himself, according to MSP Sgt. Dan Thomas.

Troopers and deputies were dispatched to the hotel around 12:30 a.m. for what was initially believed to be a domestic situation after the fire alarm was pulled. An employee called 911, Thomas said. Gerovac, who was intoxicated and possibly under the influence of drugs, had cuts on his hands, but it is not immediately known how he sustained the injuries, Thomas said.

Gerovac was treated at the scene by Life EMS, and personal protective equipment (PPE) was used by paramedics and police, Thomas said.

Troopers and deputies followed a blood trail in the hotel to track him down.

“We believe he was on some kind of narcotic,” Thomas said.

No one else was injured, he said, and no one was staying with him at the hotel.

Gervoack attempted to run from officers when they first made contact with him and he pulled away from them and refused to obey commands when they first attempted to apprehend him, Thomas said.

Bail was set at $7,500, 10%. A probable cause hearing is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. on April 8, 2020.
