Fit Club students win bikes as part of fitness challenge
LUDINGTON — Spectrum Health Ludington Hospital’s Win With Wellness Fit Club program recently awarded bicycles to 14 local elementary students. The bicycles were prizes from the Fit Club 100 Mile Challenge, which encourages students to walk or run 100 miles during the school year.
“We congratulate all of the Fit Club students on the hard work they put forth over the last year with special congratulations to this year’s bike winners,” said Kaley Petersen, director of foundation and community services at Spectrum Health Ludington Hospital. “We also thank our area schools, teachers, Fit Club ambassadors, dedicated staff and the numerous community partners who help make the Fit Club program possible.”
During the 2018-2019 school year the 100 Mile Challenge had participation from 2,243 students from Mason, Oceana and Lake counties, collectively earning 88,874 miles. Of those, 301 students surpassed 100 miles, making them eligible to win a bike from Spindrift Cyclesports in Ludington. One student from each participating Fit Club school was randomly selected as the winner of a bike.
Spectrum Health Ludington Hospital has offered Fit Club at local elementary schools since 2014. The program is integrated into the school curriculum and provides interactive, developmentally appropriate educational modules starting in kindergarten and continuing through fifth grade.
“The goal of our program is to engage youth early on in their lives to make healthy lifestyle choices and learn that hard work can lead to great results,” Petersen said.
