“Maker” the word according to Merriam-Webster means, “one who makes” and according to Urban Dictionary, “those who love to create things in their spare time.” Mason County Press is looking around the local areas to find those who consider themselves Makers. Whether they make things for a living or as a hobby, we will uncover many who have a passion for creating things with their hands and sharing those items with the world.
LUDINGTON — Husband and wife Nathan Grubich and Amanda St. Hilaire met at art school in Tennessee, got married, and decided to make art together. Nathan grew up in Midland while Amanda had grown up near the ocean. They knew they wanted to be on the west shore of Michigan. After some research, they chose Ludington and opened The Red Door Gallery and Studio, 19 years ago.
The studio began on Ludington Avenue and a few years ago was moved to its present location at 416 S. James St. Amanda and Nathan are ceramic artists and much of their work is featured in the gallery, along with work from several other regional artists.
During the summer, The Red Door offers its popular art camp for kids. Over the past week, session one exposed kids ages 6 to 9 to mixed media. This coming week, a similar session will be available for kids ages 8 to 11. Clay Camp for kids ages 8 to 12 will be held from July 29 to Aug. 2, with another session Aug. 12 to 16 for kids ages 9 to 14.
