Lakeshore Food Club plans healthy programs for summer

LUDINGTON — The Lakeshore Food Club is teaming up with Kendra Gibson of Michigan State University Extension to offer two summer programs to get adults and kids outside and moving — toward greater health and nutrition.

Walk It Out Wellness Club is a bi-weekly meetup where Gibson will share her knowledge of nutrition and health, as well as give suggestions on how to keep it fun. Each Walk it Out event will start with a walk through the neighborhood and will end with recipes and tips on how to stay active. The Walk It Out events will include giveaways and food samples.

“This is an excellent opportunity to take time to walk, learn and connect with community,” said Gibson. “Our goal is to support a culture of health in Mason County by encouraging people to take small steps that can lead to a healthier lifestyle.”

The popular Eat A Rainbow series will return for its second year at Lakeshore Food Club. Gibson will lead this hands-on class series for kids ages 4-7. Children will grow their own vegetable garden and learn about healthy eating through stories, crafts and games.

“Eat A Rainbow was such a hit last year, we’re expanding our little garden for 2019,” said Kate Lietz, Lakeshore Food Club program coordinator. “We’re so fortunate to have this amazing space and such a great partner in Extension.”

  • Walk it Out Wellness Club will take place June 11 and 25; July 9 and 23; and Aug. 6 and 20.
  • Eat A Rainbow will take place June 18, July 2, 16, 30 and Aug. 13 and 27.

Both Walk It Out and Eat A Rainbow will be held from 10 a.m. – 11 a.m. at the Lakeshore Resource Network, 920 E. Tinkham Ave.

Families are encouraged to register for both programs — all are welcome. These programs are free, but registration is required. Call 231-845-3363 or email gibso126@msu.edu to sign up.
