LUDINGTON – The 57-year-old Free Soil man accused of repeatedly stabbing his 72-year-old brother and punching a Mason County sheriff’s deputy in the face over the weekend has been arraigned in 79th District Court on charges of felonious assault and resisting and opposing an officer.

Gerald Francis Morong’s bond was set at $10,000 cash/surety, and he is currently lodged at the Mason County Jail.

The incident occurred Saturday, March 23, shortly after noon, in the 8200 block of Tuttle Road in Free Soil Township, according to Mason County Sheriff Kim Cole.

Morong allegedly punched the deputy in the side of the head prior to being taken into custody.

Deputies and a Michigan DNR conservation officer found Morong outside the residence and his brother inside the house, Cole said.

The victim sustained multiple stab wounds to his arm and leg. Life EMS transported him to Spectrum Health Ludington Hospital where he was initially treated before being transferred to Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.
