Reformed church’s Hand 2 Hand program helps MCC students.

AMBER TOWNSHIP — Every week, over 80 children in the Mason County Central school district receive packages of food and supplies from Mason County Reformed Church’s Hand 2 Hand program. The program was started in 2012 by Pastor Rick Van Haitsma who had a heart for helping the children in the church’s community, according to Mary DeWys, the program’s coordinator.

“Back then I was just helping out with the packaging,” DeWys said. “When Pastor Rick died in 2013, I took it over.”

Initially, the program served 12 to 15 elementary children. Now, there are 81 children in grades kindergarten through eighth grade who receive weekly supplies. The program is also expanding into the high school.

“We have several teams of volunteers that come to the church and pack,” DeWys said. “We also have volunteers who deliver the packages. We are always looking for people to help, especially with delivery.”

Several of the Hand 2 Hand volunteers are also volunteers with the church’s Kids Hope program, where volunteers mentor an elementary student for an hour each week.

Hand 2 Hand was the inspiration for the Lakeshore Food 4 Kids program that is operated by volunteers in the Ludington school district.

Hand 2 Hand is operated through donations. This year’s budget was over $10,500 and it is expected to grow next year. Donations may be sent to Hand 2 Hand, Mason County Reformed Church, 45 S. Amber Rd., Scottville, MI 49454. Those who with questions may call 231-757-2088.
