MCC principal publishes children’s book; will give copies to his students.

SCOTTVILLE — Kevin Kimes is passionate about teaching children life’s valuable lessons. The Mason County Central Upper Elementary principal has been in education for over 25 years, working almost that entire time in the community where he grew up. Kimes recently published a children’s book that teaches a message on anti-bullying, friendship, values, and family.

Kimes will read “The Moment Time Stood Still” to the 300-plus third through fifth grade students in his school next month during a special parent night on March 13, in observation of reading month. He will then give a copy of the book to each of the students.

“The Moment Time Stood Still” is a story about a working mother, looking for a fresh start, moves to Scottville with her two children, her son Ben in fourth grade and her daughter Tilda in first grade.

During his first day of school, Ben learns about the values the school tries to instill through the acronym “Making Correct Choices” (MCC). He meets some new friends but then is confronted by a boy who isn’t making correct choices. Ben then needs to make a choice. (Editor’s note, you’ll need to read the book for the rest of the story).

“I feel very strongly about teaching children about valuable life lessons such as literacy, kindness, love, compassion, and courage,” Kimes says. “This book brings those values together and also pays honor to the many hardworking families who live in Mason County. It’s a privilege for me to be part of these children’s lives and I know every single teacher at Mason County Central, and every other school in Mason County, feels the same way. Creating this book has been a joy.”

Kimes received assistance in creating the book from his fellow principal Chris Etchison of Scottville Elementary. The name of the principal in the book, Mr. Kimson, is a combination of Kimes and Etchison.

Kimes also received financial assistance from many community partners who helped make the free distribution possible.

“This community never stops amazing me,” Kimes says. “We live in one of the most generous places and I am very humble and thankful for the help I have received to bring this book to our students.”

The book is available for sale on Apple iTunes, Amazon and Barnes and Noble. It will also be available at the Mason County District Library.
