LUDINGTON — The man who seriously injured a local teacher in a hit and run crash nearly five years ago has been arrested again on charges, among others, involving his driving. Brian Keith Blackburn, 29, no address listed, was arrested Monday, Jan. 28 by the Mason County Sheriff’s Office and charged with a felony of assaulting/resisting/obstructing police and misdemeanor charges of domestic violence and reckless driving. He was released from prison on Oct. 12, 2018.

Blackburn allegedly pulled the keys out of the ignition of the vehicle his “significant other” was driving on US 10 in front of Walmart Monday around 6 p.m., according to Mason County Sheriff Kim Cole.

“Following a 911 call, responding deputies located a vehicle parked in the roadway and learned the male passenger had removed the keys from the vehicle while the female driver was operating the vehicle westbound on US 10,” Cole said.

“The suspect was arrested for reckless driving and domestic violence. The subject refused (to be) patted down and struggled with deputies during the booking procedure,” said Cole.

On April 16, 2014, Blackburn, who admitted in 51st Circuit Court that he was drunk (his blood alcohol level was .20 — the legal limit is .08), drove through the Shop-N-Save parking lot in Pere Marquette Township and struck Scott Dumas, then 50-years-old, who was walking through the parking lot to his vehicle. Dumas, a teacher at Mason County Central Middle School, was seriously injured and airlifted by helicopter to a Grand Rapids hospital. To this day, he still suffers from effects of the crash.

On Sept. 23, 2014, now-retired 51st Circuit Court Judge Richard Cooper sentenced Blackburn, who at the time lived in Ludington, to 2.5 to 5 years and one term of one year, four months to two years. The terms ran concurrent, and he was given credit for 161 days served in jail. He was also ordered to pay $5,185 in restitution and $2,034 in fines and costs. His charges included operating a vehicle while intoxicated (OWI) causing incapacitating injury; failure to stop at a personal injury accident causing serious injury; and assaulting/resisting/obstructing a police officer.

Resisting a police officer is punishable by up to two years in prison and/or a $2,000 fine. Domestic assault on a spouse or a person in a dating relationship  is punishable by up to 93 days imprisonment and/or a $500 fine, as is reckless driving.

Blackburn is scheduled to appear in court for a preliminary examination on Feb. 13 at 1:15 p.m. Bail was set at $5,000, 10%.
