LUDINGTON – A 31-year-old Ludington woman was sentenced to time served in 51st Circuit Court Tuesday, Jan. 22, for stealing from her parents to get drug money.
Melissa Marie Silver, of 604 E. Loomis St., is convicted of receiving and concealing stolen property $1,000-$20,000. One count of larceny in a building was dismissed.
Silver, who has no prior criminal history, started with the use of Vicodin at the age of 25, said Mason County Prosecutor Paul Spaniola. She then began using injectable heroin, “pawning her own parents things for drug money. This was done on a plural number of occasions.”
Silver’s attorney David Glancy said his client has been “open and honest through this procedure in addressing her substance abuse problem.”
Silver said she has been attending AA (Alcoholics Anonymous) and NA (Narcotics Anonymous) classes to get her drug problem under control.
“I’m encouraged to see the amount of work you have put in,” said Judge Susan K. Sniegowski regarding Silver’s drug treatment. “It shows real motivation.”
Sniegowski sentenced Silver to serve two days up front of a one-year jail term with credit for two days served, which allows her to enter an inpatient recovery program. She also ordered 18 months probation and $750 in restitution.
Sentencing guidelines in the case are 0-3 months.
