PERE MARQUETTE TOWNSHIP — A second person involved in a Friday evening crash on US 10 died over the weekend. Mary Geurink, 70, of Branch died at Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids. Her husband, Ken Geurink, 71, died on the scene of the crash.
The crash occurred about 8:30 p.m. Friday, July 14, in the 5200 block of US 10. A Chevrolet Cruz, driven by a 20-year-old Bitely woman, was eastbound on US 10, in the passing lane, when a Ford Explorer, driven by a 59-year-old Lennon woman, apparently pulled out of the Burger King driveway into its path, according to deputies from Mason County Sheriff’s Office. Ken Geurink was driving a Honda motorcycle and his wife, Mary, was riding. The motorcycle was struck by the two vehicles, deputies said.
Ken Geurink was pronounced dead on the scene; Mary Geurink was transported by ambulance to Spectrum Health Ludington Hospital and then flown by Aeromed helicopter to Grand Rapids.
The crash, which occurred about 8:30 p.m. closed US 10 for several hours. The highway opened back up at 10:20 p.m.
The Michigan State Police, which is leading the investigation, has not officially released names of any of the victims involved in the crash. The deaths of the Geurinks were announced during church services Sunday morning at Mason County Refromed Church, where they were members.
The crash remains under investigation.
Responding to the scene were Michigan State Police, Mason County Sheriff’s Office, Scottville Police Department, Pere Marquette Township Fire Department, Ludington Fire Department, and Life EMS.
