SCOTTVILLE — Mason County Central Upper Elementary third grade students released about 40 salmon fry into the Pere Marquette River at Riverside Park Monday afternoon. The project, taught by teacher Cheri Rozell, is part of the Michigan Department of Natural Resources’ salmon in the classroom program. Rozell said the students received a small cup of salmon eggs in November and have been raising them since.

The project was a valuable life lesson for the students, who learned about the creation of life and the life cycles of a fish, Rozell said. It also required the students to monitor the water and learn about Ph levels and the consequences of fish being in water that isn’t suitable for them.

“Today is a celebration of this project and we are releasing them in the water,” Rozell said. “Hopefully some of them will survive and become part of the eco system of the river.”
